Marathon Oil, an energy industry leader, is engaged in the worldwide exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas.  More than 3,000 employees work worldwide to consistently deliver top performance and value.  Marathon is currently seeking an experienced Geophysicist in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  This position will be part of an integrated subsurface team, focused on executing and expanding our Oklahoma program. 

Responsibilities:
  • Support the horizontal drilling and completions activity in the Anadarko Woodford Shale Project with geophysical data and interpretations to reduce risk due to geological hazards.
  • Create and maintain detailed structural and stratigraphic models to support drilling planning and execution.  Activities include model design, well path design, verification with geologists and directional planners, structural prognosis for drilling and iterative improvement of structural understanding while drilling.
  • Contribute to optimization of Project costs and contribution to production results through a better understanding of reservoir and rock properties such as stress, anisotropy and fracturing.
  • Develop and execute geophysical methods that include prestack AVO and azimuthal analysis for anisotropy, multi-component analysis for fracture detection, inversion and closure stress calculation to estimate fracture stimulation requirements.
  • Generate geophysical work plans to meet technical and financial objectives; coordinate seismic processing projects to insure timely and cost effective project completion.
  • Interface with Chief Geophysicist to identify appropriate reprocessing candidates and potentially identify any new reprocessing techniques that may enhance imaging over a drill location.
Qualifications:
  • Self motivated individual with ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Bachelors in Geology or Geophysics required; Masters required in Geoscience field.
  • 5+ years relevant industry experience (Geophysicists role) required.
  • 2+ years experience with progressing shale prospects to technical maturity preferred
  • Background or experience in Basin Analysis; Play Fairway Mapping; seismic stratigraphy; rock physics or source rock characterization
  • Ability to proactively identify critical risk elements and design workplan to address
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Broad geophysical knowledge of seismic processing, seismic imaging and seismic acquisition technology
  • Broad knowledge of VSP and MicroSeismic acquisition and processing
