The Wyoming Asset Team is seeking a reservoir engineer to fill the position of Subsurface Lead for design, implementation, and management of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects in the Big Horn and Wind River Basins of Wyoming.  This position is affiliated with a work scope of various EOR projects at different stages of development, including 1)  the continued expansion of a double displacement project (DDP) in the Pitchfork field, which began with first gas injection in December 2011;  2) the restart of injection of a DDP project in the Circle Ridge field, expected to begin in late 2012;  and 3)  the preparation of a decision support package in 2012 for the approval of a CO2-miscible EOR project in the Steamboat field.  The applicant will work on a multi-discipline team, in conjunction with geo-science, land, permitting, drilling, facilities, HES, and the Cody-based production operations team, evaluating the feasibility of the projects.  Occasionally travel to Cody will be required.




  • Gathers reservoir data, performs analyses and calculations, and applies models and simulations to characterize reservoir or field properties.  Develops reservoir performance predictions.   Prepares estimates of in-place hydrocarbon volumes.  Produces reserve estimates to support audits.
    • Develops appropriate analysis plans required to understand reservoir properties.
    • Researches existing databases and gathers data to perform reservoir analyses.
    • Performs analyses and calculations to define reservoir characteristics.  Prepares data files and summary reports.  
    • Defines geometry of reservoir, divides reservoir into grids, and distributes reservoir properties. Develops static and dynamic models for reservoir behaviors. 
    • Validates dynamic reservoir models by running simulations and comparing results with actual production history.
    • Develops reservoir performance predictions by applying results from models and simulations.  Prepares estimates of in-place hydrocarbon volume.
    • Produces summaries of reserve estimates, documents analyses and calculations, and supports validation of reserve estimates for audits.  Presents field development plan overviews. 
    • Presents models and simulation results as required.  Revises analyses, calculations and models as data becomes available.
    • As required, trains technical peers in reservoir characterization processes and technologies.


  • Applies reservoir analysis techniques, simulations, and economic forecasting to prioritize development projects for maximizing asset value and production improvement.  Addresses development options by considering projects, techniques, or wells for drilling, recompletion, or conversion.
    • Conducts feasibility studies by applying models, simulation results, and cost estimates to assess viability of development projects. Evaluates options, considering technical feasibility, risks, costs, and likely production.  Prepares prioritized lists of development project options. 
    • Prepares and presents decision support packages for proposed project plans, including economic justification, schedule, risk analysis, supporting data, cost estimates, and personnel requirements. 


Responsible for conducting operations safely and in accordance with Marathon and regulatory guidelines, as well as for making and reporting safety observations.



Bachelor’s required; Engineering, Petroleum (preferred)


Five-plus years total industry experience in reservoir engineering.  A fundamental

understanding of EOR processes including DDP and CO2 miscible flooding,

is required.  Knowledge in reservoir simulation, as applied to the EOR

processes, is required.


MS Office suite; reservoir simulation tools (Eclipse & Petrel); production and pressure analysis tools (Topaze, Saphir, Amethyste); risk analysis tools and techniques (Crystal Ball and Monte Carlo methods);  and forecasting and economic analysis tools (DSS & Aries).


Excellent oral and written communication, teamwork, and planning & organization skills
