Marathon’s Corporate Performance Management (CPM) system integrates planning, budgeting, forecasting, performance monitoring, and scenario modeling to facilitate strategic decisions at all levels within the Company.  The CPM system interfaces through Microsoft Excel with Marathon’s primary economic modeling software (Landmark ARIES.)   The Planning departments in the company use ARIES and the CPM system to develop and maintain the business and tactical plan forecasts associated with the company’s asset base.  In addition to this responsibility, the Planning staff members often build or assist the Asset Teams’ technical staff to build the base asset, new project, and acquisition economic evaluations using ARIES.


The position being advertised will provide support for ARIES to its planning and technical professionals.  This support will include the development of economic models (scripts), as well as creation and maintenance of existing models used by the program.  Additionally there is potential to support the Business Development organization in the analysis of acquisition and disposition candidates.


In order to effectively support the users of this software, the applicant should have strong computer science skills, some programming experience and Microsoft Excel proficiency.  The applicant should also possess a robust understanding of economic principles and strong analytical problem solving capabilities.  Additionally, the applicant will be interacting with a variety of technical professionals, requiring effective communication skills, as well as the ability to manage time and priorities.


The position will report to the North America Operations Planning Manager.   



1)      Provide general support for the development and maintenance of economic forecasting models.

2)      Create and maintain scripts associated with economic modeling software.

3)      Create and maintain ARIES Input Settings to facilitate various individual team parameters and evaluation objectives

4)      Maintain the ARIES document library on the ARIES Community of Practice site

5)      Create and maintain Corporate price forecast sidefiles

6)      Conduct specialized ARIES training for various audiences, including Asset Team and Planning staff

7)      Provide economic analysis for potential Business Development opportunities


Degree: Bachelors Required
Major Discipline: Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Finance or other relevant discipline

Experience: Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience

Software Proficiencies:  Microsoft Office, Microsoft Access (or similar database), Microsoft Excel, Expert user of at least one of the mainstream economics packages, such as ARIES, PEEP, Value Navigator or similar

Skill Set: Strong background in Petroleum Economics, both domestic and international, comfortable with statistical and stochastic methods such as Monte Carlo and probability distribution functions, has, or had basic programming skills and has implemented their own algorithms in a simple programming language
