Marathon Oil Company seeks Houston based Senior Land Professional for Eagle Ford Shale Team.  The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten (10) years experience, demonstrating increasing responsibility in the following areas: oil and gas exploration and development operations, lease and contract negotiation, broker supervision, and managing partner relations.  Texas land experience preferred, but all relevant experience will be considered.


The successful candidate for this position will help coordinate and carry out these primary responsibilities:

  • Pro-actively identify, seek and develop significant and impactful business opportunities that are in areas of interest to Marathon.
  • Build rapport and maintain mutually successful relationships with lessors, government officials and industry partners to enhance our business opportunities and profile in the community.  Senior Land Professional candidates should be capable and comfortable cultivating and maintaining professional relationships with high level internal and external peers.  
  • Mentor less experienced land professionals and contribute meaningfully to their professional development. 
  • Advise management regarding strategic land issues and potential opportunities and risks associated with various land issues. 
  • Research, prepare and make presentations to management, internal asset teams and external partners.   
  • Negotiate, prepare, and conclude a variety of strategic land contracts and transactions, including high value oil and gas leases, surface agreements, assignments, joint operating agreements, farm-in/farm-out agreements, miscellaneous letter agreements, AMI's, etc. 
  • Coordinate land broker activities associated with title checking, lease acquisition and surface damages.
  • Coordinate title opinions and curative and request title approval for drilling and division order purposes. Assist the Division Order group with initial ownership set up.
  • Utilize technology to enhance your productivity as a land professional.  Senior Land Professional candidates should possess a competent working knowledge of all standard office software, such as Microsoft Office products, and a willingness and ability to learn industry or company specific software products, such as Tobin and ARC GIS.
  • Develop and maintain unit and pooling agreements in cooperation with internal team members and external partners.  Senior Land Professionals should be fully competent in applicable pooling and unitization requirements, and able to strategize with internal peers to maximize the value of company acreage.
  • Lead and/or contribute to interdepartmental or multidisciplinary teams working on issues of importance to Marathon.

Travel: Moderate travel required. Trips to the San Antonio office and various counties, fields, and surface locations are required periodically and may require overnight travel.

  • Degree: Bachelors required
  • Major Discipline: PLM, Energy Management or Energy Commerce Degree Preferred
  • Years Experience Required: Minimum of ten years of experience in exploration and/or production Land activities..
